Job Summary General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS’ expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.
Under general direction, this position is responsible for supporting the manufacturing production process of Optical systems and Optical Space Payloads to ensure they meet the mission requirements, while focusing on manufacturing, integration and testing, of parts, components, sub-assemblies, and final assemblies. Analyzes, investigates and provides solutions to a variety of technical problems of moderate scope and complexity.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Reads and understands processes and procedures as they pertain to the job.
- Reads and understands moderate to complex documentation such as drawings, schematics, diagrams, wire lists, work instructions, production orders and procedures.
- Identifies discrepancies in assembly processes or documentation and promptly escalates.
- Has a clear understanding of the 5S methodology and how to implement it into a daily routine.
- Precision lapping of shims and critical mechanical interfaces.
- Bonding of optical components, including potting of lenses, bipods to mirror substrates, etc.
- Performs mechanical alignment of optical components to tight tolerances.
- Experience with air bearing rotary table Height gauge, mu-checker.
- Understands the importance of maintaining an ESD safe work environment.
- Performs/Completes system assembly and integration, working to technical drawings and schematics.
- Works closely with engineering in build process development and improvement, and application of lessons learned.
- Uses calibrated tools such as DMM’s, calipers, micrometers, torque wrenches and crimpers.
- Analyzes, evaluates and resolves engineering related production problems.
- Evaluates, develops and controls manufacturing processes, procedures and tooling.
- Analyzes defective, damaged or malfunctioning parts, assemblies, equipment and systems; analyzes and routes non-conforming reports; develops and implements corrective action.
- Identifies training needs and trains appropriate staff.
- May represent group as member of change control board.
- Analyzes, investigates and recommends design and process changes; coordinates with engineering and manufacturing departments.
- Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
- Expected to maintain a productive and safe working environment in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
- Other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:
- Typically requires a bachelor’s degree and five or more years of progressive professional experience in a technical capacity in production operations. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education
- Must have complete knowledge of production and engineering support principles, theories and concepts; a complete understanding of practices, techniques, and standards; strong working knowledge and experience of Lean Manufacturing principles; and knowledge of tool design and concepts.
- Experience working with delicate optical surfaces, including handling, integration, and cleaning.
- Cleanroom experience is a plus.
- Opto-Mechanical and Laser Technician experience a plus.
- Some hoisting and rigging experience using gantry, bridge, and jib cranes.
- Must be customer focused and possess:
- ability to participate in the development of new concepts and communicate and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment;
- organization skills to coordinate work phases;
- ability to determine the appropriate approach or project level and provide solutions to a variety of moderately complex technical problems;
- good communication, documentation, presentation and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with all levels of employees and management;
- ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information; and
- strong computer skills. Ability to work independently or in a team environment is essential as is the ability to work extended hours and travel as required.
Salary:$73,700 - $128,780
