General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS’ expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.

We are currently hiring a Senior Systems Engineer for Digital Beam Forming who will be a key member within the GA-EMS Radar Technologies department. In this capacity, the Senior Systems Engineer will lead systems development of new radar digital beamforming capabilities. The Senior Systems Engineer will report into the Senior Manager of Architecture and Systems Engineering within the Radar Technologies group.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBLITIES:
  • Perform System Engineering development of new digital beamforming radar capabilities for radar detection and tracking of air targets in challenging environments (clutter, electronically contested)
  • Ability to derive adaptive beamforming and associated subsystem requirements from mission level needs
  • Perform system analysis and trade studies, develop new architectures and algorithms, and generate requirements
  • Collaborate with software and hardware engineering to define computational needs and architecture (CPU, GPU, FPGA, hybrid)
  • Develop simulation models to assess performance of new designs in support of PDR and CDR
  • Develop digital beamforming integration and test plans and tools to validate new designs
  • Analyze data from performance simulations and field tests, trouble shoot issues, and develop fixes or design updates to resolve
  • Represent company at technical reviews, meetings and formal design reviews.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; eighteen or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, sixteen or more years of experience with a masters degree, or thirteen or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Demonstrates a detailed and extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with some experience in project leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience in software defined digital beamforming including conventional and adaptive beamforming techniques, optimization of weights, and Maximum Likelihood Estimation angle of arrival estimation
  • Experience developing systems tools and simulations using Matlab, Python, and/or C.
  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout a fast-paced, R&D environment.
  • Must have strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively interface with other departments, customers, government representatives, and/or professionals.
  • As a member of a multi-disciplinary team, collaborate on backlog planning, implementation approach, and development of integration and test plans
  • Must be customer focused and able to work on a self- initiated basis or in a team environment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance required.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: 
  • Experience with field integration of digital beam forming capabilities
  • Experience with development tools including Confluence, Jira, and Git
  • Experience with calibration techniques to mitigate errors affecting digital beamforming performance
  • Familiarity with FPGA development and FPGA based architectures
  • Demonstrated experience developing radar system level simulation capability (IQ and/or detection based) to validate mission capabilities
  • Previous experience working with the Department of Defense.
  • Demonstrated experience developing electronic warfare techniques is a plus
