Job Summary

GA-EMS offers modular and scalable satellite platforms backed with a history of operational flight experience to support defense, civil, commercial, and academic mission requirements.

We currently have exciting opportunity for a Sr Satellite Ground Software Developer to join our team located in Englewood, CO.

This position may be supported remotely at our facilities in:
• Englewood, CO (preferrable)
• San Diego, CA
• Boulder, CO
• Huntsville, AL

The primary role for the candidate involves C/C++ and Python software application development where the ground software applications are deployed as Amazon cloud services. These applications provide the capabilities for the command and control of our satellites and the satellite operations. This position will involve leadership of a small development team.

The secondary function is working on embedded real-time software development that involves C/C++ and Python software application development. The development ranges from low-level Board Support Package development for our avionics solutions to Flight Software Applications executing as real-time software within our satellites.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Technical leadership of small development teams, which involves leading and mentoring junior engineers on software development and delivery of software products.
  • Perform the technical objectives within the Software development life cycle (Requirements, Design, Implementation, Test) phase.
  • Ensure that the General Atomics processes are properly followed.
  • Work with the team on software solutions to support the planned product delivery.
  • Determine technical objectives for user requirements and specifications and plan for enterprise software development within the broader organizational scope. Software development encompasses end-user, system level, and data management applications,
  • Formulate plans and guides the development and implementation of software solutions including language, coding, platform, resource requirements, testing, and documentation.
  • Evaluates integration of software applications with the overall computing environment; and responsible for planning/overseeing documentation, testing, maintenance, and software updates.
  • Communicates with domain experts, users, and management throughout the software development lifecycle, represents the company as the prime technical contact on contracts and/or projects, and interacts with senior external personnel on significant technical matters requiring coordination between the organizations.
  • Plan and coordinate deployment of enterprise applications including cross-platform compliance.
  • Plan and coordinate the maintenance of enterprise solutions including debugging, maintenance, and updating to ensure viability in an evolving environment.
  • Plan for future applications based on new developments in computer technology.
  • May function in a leadership role for a project and/or program and provide direction and guidance to less experienced developers or team of developers.
  • Represent the organization as a prime technical contact for the project and/or program with the software developer group, customer, and management as well as with the wider community through the publishing and presentation of technical papers. Assist in the development of additional sources of revenue.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in computer science, information systems or related discipline and progressive software development experience as follows; twelve or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, ten or more years of experience with a masters degree, or seven or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.
  • Must have a complete understanding of software development concepts, principles, and theory and demonstrate complete understanding and application of programming and analysis concepts.
  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.
  • Ability to organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level and to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
  • Must have strong experience in software development with C/C++ and Python languages
  • Must be familiar with:
    • Software development life cycle (Req, Design, Implementation, Test)
    • Agile SCRUM development process
    • Linux development environment C
    • Cloud development
  • Desired experience with:
    • Java
    • Embedded software development and real-time application experience (i.e. experience with real-time Linux or VxWorks)
    • CI/CD pipelines experience (i.e. DevOps pipelines, DevSecOps pipelines)
    • Atlassian tools (JIRA, BitBucket, Bamboo)
    • Docker containers
  • Familiarity with all aspects of the satellite system life cycle is desired.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain DoD Secret clearance is required. Active Top-Secret clearance is desired.
