The Quality Engineer – FAI Process Owner is responsible for managing and improving the First Article Inspection (FAI) process to ensure compliance with industry standards and internal requirements. This role requires a strong understanding of aerospace and OEM manufacturing processes, industry regulations, and quality management principles. The Quality Engineer will be accountable for updating and maintaining processes and work instructions, leading training efforts, creating and maintaining key performance metrics, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to resolve bottlenecks and gaps in the FAI process.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Process Ownership & Compliance:
  • Serve as the primary owner of the First Article Inspection (FAI) process, ensuring compliance with AS9102, ISO 9001, and other relevant industry standards.
  • Develop, update, and maintain FAI-related work instructions, procedures, and process documentation to reflect best practices and compliance requirements.
  • Ensure that all FAI activities align with internal quality policies, customer requirements, and regulatory expectations.
Process Improvement & Issue Resolution:
  • Identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies within the FAI process and develop strategies for continuous improvement.
  • Conduct root cause analyses and implement corrective actions to address quality and compliance issues within the FAI process.
  • Collaborate with IT, manufacturing, production control, and program management teams to optimize workflows and integrate digital tools for efficiency.
Training & Development:
  • Develop and deliver training programs for key stakeholders involved in the FAI process, ensuring personnel are knowledgeable in industry standards and best practices.
  • Conduct periodic refresher training and assessments to ensure adherence to updated processes and procedures.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for FAI and provide guidance to manufacturing, quality, and engineering teams.
Performance Monitoring & Metrics:
  • Establish, track, and maintain key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure FAI process compliance, effectiveness, and efficiency.
  • Develop dashboards and reporting mechanisms to communicate FAI performance, trends, and opportunities for improvement to leadership.
  • Implement burndown charts and progress tracking tools to ensure timely completion of FAI packages.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
  • Experience with digital transformation and process automation for quality documentation is a plus.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering or related discipline and six or more years of related experience with a bachelor's degree or four or more years with a master's degree. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or higher certification preferred.
  • Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or equivalent certification.
  • Experience with ERP/MES systems and digital FAI tools.
  • Knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) principles.
  • Strong project management skills and experience leading cross-functional initiatives.
  • Hybrid work environment with time split between the manufacturing floor, office, and potential supplier visits.
  • Occasional travel may be required for supplier audits or training initiatives.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret clearance is required.

Salary:$89,180 - $155,825
