Job Summary General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.

We have an exciting opportunity in San Diego, CA for a Structural Analysis Engineer in our Airframe Integrity Group at GA-ASI. Under general direction with limited review, this position is responsible for applying innovative approaches to resolving unusual or complex engineering problems. Assignments are normally outlined in terms of overall objectives and reviewed largely at completion. Initiates the planning of engineering projects and develops innovative designs or modifications in order to meet project goals. Independently performs difficult/complex engineering work with instructions as to the general expected results. Documents findings, communicates results to engineering staff, makes technical presentations, and may represent the organization as the prime technical contact on small contracts or single component projects. Provides direction to design or technical staff and may lead a team of moderately experienced professional staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supports engineering by evaluating and interpreting technical objectives and develops solutions to advanced technical engineering problem (s).
  • Responsible for performing structural analysis of aircraft primary structural components, assemblies, and systems while working as an integrated team for design studies to optimize structures and meet program requirements.
  • Structural analysis includes calculation of loads, stress analysis, fatigue analysis, and damage tolerance analysis.
  • Performs detailed structural analysis by way of classical hand techniques and developing detailed stress analysis finite element methods to support drawing release and supports the Manufacturing Review Board process.
  • Generate documentation to report analysis and test results to support airworthiness certification.
  • A working knowledge of FAA, Mil-Spec, or STANAG airworthiness requirements, along with experience with Matlab will be advantageous.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; six or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, four or more years of experience with a masters degree, or two or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Must be experienced with stress analysis of metal and composite structures
  • Desired to have knowledge and experience with fatigue and damage tolerance analyses.
  • Working knowledge with NASTRAN or ABAQUS software is required.
  • Must have at least 6 years of working experience using Finite Element Analysis tools like Hypermesh, FEMAP/NASTRAN, and/or ABAQUS.
  • Knowledge of composite material behavior, classical laminate theory, and analysis.
  • Desired to have experience evaluating manufacturing defects in composite and metallic structures.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles and theory and the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with experience in project leadership.
  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required enabling an effective interface with other departments and/or professionals, and capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact, as well as providing leadership and guidance to less experienced professionals.
  • Customer focused, formulates plans based on the development of innovative new designs in resolving advanced technical engineering problems.
  • Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoD security clearance is required.
