The Energy Group at General Atomics is seeking an experienced Director of Business Development to lead its business development, communications, and marketing efforts with a focus on diversification while maintaining the current lines of business. Reporting to the Senior Vice President of the Energy Group, the Senior Director will lead a team to collaborate closely with key divisions including MFE, Inertial Fusion Technologies (IFT), Engineering & Projects (E&P), Business Operations Office, Public/Govt Affairs and multiple technical Centers of Excellence. The role will be based at GA’s Torrey Pines Campus in San Diego.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Business Development Leadership: Lead business development efforts of the Energy Group, ensuring alignment with financial and organizational objectives.
  • Business Diversification: Drive the identification and development of new business opportunities and the expansion of existing ones. Collaborate with senior leaders across departments to ensure cross-functional alignment and integration of strategic initiatives.
  • Partnerships and Alliances: Pursue and cultivate collaborations and partnerships to foster revenue growth and new business avenues.
  • Market Analysis: Oversee and guide market research and analysis, identify potential customers, and assess licensing and product development opportunities.
  • Proposal Development: Work closely with the Business units and Business Operations Office to translate opportunities into competitive proposals, ensuring successful capture of new business.
  • Opportunity Pipeline: Lead and oversee regular reviews of the Energy Group’s business pipeline, ensuring alignment and coordination across departments for the successful pursuit of opportunities.
  • Marketing & Communications: Direct all marketing strategies to support business development, and direct all communication strategies, both internally and externally, ensuring the Energy Group’s capabilities are effectively communicated.
  • Customer Engagement: Act as the primary point of contact for business development activities, building and maintaining strong relationships with customers, stakeholders, and partners.
  • Team Management & Development: Lead and mentor the Business Development team, fostering professional growth and ensuring alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaborate with capture leads to develop impactful presentations and business development materials.
  • Provide input on market entry strategies and opportunities for expansion.
  • Support the creation and maintenance of a centralized resource management system to support business development activities.
  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with new business opportunities, ensuring that the risks are managed through careful planning and analysis
  • Implement processes to ensure accurate tracking of technical trends, customer needs, and emerging business opportunities.
  • Lead the organization in adapting to changing market conditions and technological advancements, ensuring that the Energy Group remains a leader in innovation.
  • Represent GA at industry events, customer meetings, and conferences to promote the Energy Group’s capabilities and strengthen industry relationships.
  • Lead internal and external communications, such as newsletters, press releases, and trade show materials, to raise awareness of the Energy Group’s initiatives and achievements.
  • Oversee the budgeting and financial planning of business development initiatives, ensuring alignment with business priorities and resource allocation.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Science, Engineering, or a related field, with a minimum of 10 years of progressively complex experience in business development within a technical or engineering-driven organization.
  • An MBA or advanced degree in Engineering is preferred, though equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • Strong strategic and technical acumen, with the ability to craft and execute business development strategies that align with organizational goals.
  • Proven leadership experience, including the ability to organize, plan, and manage cross-functional teams to meet deadlines and milestones.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interface with all levels of management, staff, customers, and stakeholders.
  • Solid business sense, with a track record of developing compelling business cases and analyses to support strategic decisions.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE ‘Q’ clearance.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
