General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS’ expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a System Engineer to join our team located in San Diego, CA.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conducts safety analyses for systems and components. Supports design of solutions to satisfy safety requirements. Efforts may include:
    • Developing safety program plans based on knowledge of MIL-STD-882E
    • Developing pre-liminary hazard lists and conducting pre-liminary hazard analysis
    • Conducting hardware subsystem hazard analysis
    • Conducting software functional hazard analysis
    • Conducting hardware and software system requirements hazard analysis
    • Developing and presenting safety assessment reports
    • Conducting hazardous materials analysis
    • Performing similar safety analysis
    • Conducting software safety critical code inspection and testing
  • Collaborate with all levels of program and engineering staff on design, integration and test matters and support other teams/disciplines as necessary.
  • Support program design and readiness reviews.
  • Supports operation of engineering systems and documents any problems.
  • Opportunities will arise to support internal development and new business opportunities.
  • Provides documentation and makes technical presentations as required.
  • May represent the organization as the prime technical contact on small contracts or single component projects.
  • Interface with customers during program shaping, ConOps development, and requirements derivation activities.
  • Provides direction to design or technical staff and may lead a team of moderately experienced professional staff.
  • Maintains the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; four or more years of experience with a bachelors degree or two or more years of experience with a masters degree. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Demonstrates an extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with some experience in project leadership.
  • Experience dealing with US Military customers and standards.
  • Experience supporting design and development of prototype systems through design, integration and test.
  • Experience working in or with system engineering to review system models and identify failure points.
  • Experience working or working with reliability engineering to validate safety analysis.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required enabling an effective interface with other departments and/or professionals, and capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact, as well as providing leadership and guidance to less experienced professionals.
  • Customer focused, formulates plans based on the development of innovative new designs in resolving advanced technical engineering problems.
  • Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Able to work extended hours as required.
  • Able to obtain a Secret clearance.

DESIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
  • Able to provide adaptable support to the systems engineering organization. Responsibilities may include direct program systems engineering support, proposal development, or support to internal development tasks.
  • Experience performing analysis and support decomposition of system, segment, subsystem and assembly requirements.
  • Experience in development of system requirements, ICDs and test plans/procedures.
  • Troubleshooting skills for conflicting design/development requirements, difficult coordination requirements, and special material requirements.
  • Experience supporting design of solutions to satisfy reliability and availability requirements.
  • Efforts may include:
    • Worst Case Circuit Analysis (WCCA / WCA) to ensure electrical circuit function over worst case tolerances, mission duration, thermal and radiation environments
    • Worst Case Timing Analysis (WCTA) to ensure timing requirements are satisfied
    • Electrical Parts Stress Analysis (PSA) to increase component lifetime by the reduction of applied stress
    • Failure Mode Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) to identify and mitigate single point failures
    • Reliability predictions to assess compliance to numerical reliability requirements
    • Limited Life Analysis (LLA) to ensure components meet mission life requirements
    • Develops reliability analyses and reports for program deliverables.
    • Provide Fault Detection, Isolation and Recovery (FDIR) engineering support as part of an integrated project team.
    • Participate in the parts selection process by coordinating with the EEE parts component engineer to understand survivability based on mission environments.
    • Participate in Material Review Board and Failure Review Board activities as required.
    • Lead Failure Reporting, Analysis and Corrective Action (FRACA) efforts.
    • Update reliability, availability and maintainability analysis based on field data
  • Experience working with MS Office applications, DOORS, MagicDraw/Cameo or other MBSE tools, MS Teams, and Confluence, JIRA, and other Atlassian tools.
  • Experience working with Windchill Risk and Reliability, and/or Relyence.
  • Has past experience as an Integrated Product Team Lead.
  • Has laser, nuclear or satellite prototype development experience.
  • Associated Safety Professional, safety certifications,
